The Patron Saint of Feminism: J.S. Mill on Women with Reference to ‘The Subjection of Women’

Image

Summary: This paper challenges the feminist critique of political philosophy, which often rejects philosophers for their failure to acknowledge women’s rights. Arguing against a uniformly antagonistic stance, it advocates for a more nuanced approach to reading philosophical texts. Using Jacques Derrida’s double mode of reading and Quentin Skinner’s focus on the author’s intent, the paper analyzes John Stuart Mill’s The Subjection of Women (1869). It contends that Mill’s work lays the foundation for feminist thought, particularly through his critique of women’s social inferiority and his emphasis on the posthumous authorship of the work by his wife, Harriet Taylor.
